Best wishes girls

Karla-

"I found out why my knees been so painful and uncontrollable for the last 6 months. Haha I've completely torn my acl (arterial cruciate ligament) so it's pretty cool that I carried on riding all that time lol, even in masters I was in so much pain... But I wanted to do a bars disaster coz that's 1 of the only safe tricks I had left... But it's like so bad now I can't risk riding, even walking it will pop out n I'll be in the worst pain :( I've been told I'll be having keyhole surgery to make me a new ligament which = yay, but they are taking SO long about it... So bored.... Haha...."

Smoodie-

Thanks to Yeahzine-

Recently Smoodie took a fall and got broke off..
Thought I would ask her what happened and here is what she had to say:
"Dislocated my hip, knee, and ankle [the knee is the worst part]. I was trying backflip x-ups on Corby's rezi ramp and over rotated the flip and put one leg down and boom =] My cast comes off on the 7th of december then get walking and straight on to physio and back on my bike.."

Nina B's out

Nina B-

Unfortunately I took a crash at the beginning of September at some dirt jumps in PA and broke my wrist. I did 6 weeks in a cast, and this was the new xray:

If you zoom in on the photo, just below my thumb, the cursor arrow is where my scaphoid bone is apparently still cracked :/ I learned that there is only one blood vessel that goes to this bone, and so healing time is doubled. Sentenced to another 6 weeks in a cast, but the upside is at least I don't need surgery!! Woo!!

And, I get to wear this new "exos" cast, removeable, and waterproof, and they heat it in a nuwave oven to mold it to swelling, and even to my handlebar grips.

Drum roll until Nov.30th for my follow up and hopefully cast off party!! Woo!!

In the meantime I've been holding it down in Cleveland working on another issue of "yeahhhh!" zine, covering my travels and adventures in girls bmx.

Petas Shredding the US

My holiday has been unreal so far… I’ve been having the best time riding my bike, rock climbing and hiking in Sundance. Everyone I’ve meet so far have been so cool to hang with. I’m going canoeing for a few days next week, which I can’t wait for because I’ve never been. Then I start my road trip to Vegas to watch the Dew Tour.

Angie Marino

Angie Marino.... Injured... more...

Angie:
Kayley (who had my helmet and knee pads) was arriving on Thursday, but we all went riding on Wednesday. I thought I'd be fine to ride, but nope haha my wrist was really weak and I got didn't want to land hard on it, cause it is still broken, over shot the box a bit, landed in a turndown and my knee punched the ground. My skin got ripped off about four inches down my leg right under my knee to the bone. I went to the hospital to get it stitched back up, but I popped a bursa sac which infected my knee and shin. I tried just taking it easy so I wouldn't have to get surgery for the next couple days..

Nina B -X games

This year's XGames "Girls Day" was awesome!! Girl Riders Organization (G.R.O.) had a booth setup all weekend long offering free workshops for girls attending X16 to try skateboarding and BMX! I've been doing this for the past few years, and every year the turnout and the amount of fun we all have is bigger and better!

Though X Games doesn't yet offer a girls class for BMX, the girl skateboarders let Lauren and I crash their street course practice :) Got in a few grinds down some ledges and rode the teacups, it was awesome!! Got the ultimate boot off the superpark course, but just getting to cruise the street course, see a bunch of old friends at X, make some new ones, was amazing!! The ultimate reward was the smiles and good times had from the GRO clinics :) Everyone had a blast and I hope we can do it every year! Hope you enjoy the pics!!

CORE SERIES 2010

Colony bmx website-

The Core Series final was on Sunday & was a good day for sure. A good turn out & the riding level was really high with a few first’s done at the park. Decade airs, flip whips, front flips, smith to whips were a few stand outs from the day. So good to watch. Our own Peta Shepherd did well enough to get 7th on the day & 5th overall for the year in expert. Well done Peta !! Alex Hiam also rode well yesterday & took out 3rd place in the pro class. Thanks to Ange for the pics.

How To -

Bunny Hop-

Start off standing next to your bike, roll back with your wrists and pull the bars towards yourself to get the front wheel up off of the ground, then push the bars up and away from your body. Congratulations, your bike just bunnyhopped, now all you need to do is add yourself to the mix.
When you are on the bike the trick will be to jump up from the pedals and use the “up and out” motion of your arms to help the bike follow your feet upwards. Timing is everything, so be prepared to practice a lot. Rolling forward slowly pull back on the bars as if you were going to manual. When your front wheel is a few inches off of the ground, go light on your feet and push the bars up and away. Your first hops will be really small, but don’t stress, learning the motion and timing is the hardest part, after that, its onward and upward.
When you get the hang of little hops, try lifting the front end of the bike higher and adding a little more “pop” to your feet, jumping up from the pedals and following through with your arms to get more height. As you work your way up inch-by-inch, try tucking your knees up to your chest to allow your bike to travel further upward before your body weight stops it. In the end, the amount of “spring” you put into your leap will decide how high you can hop, but don’t be fooled, the arm motion is what’s lifting the bike off of the ground, so expect some sore forearms in the months to come.
Good Luck!

Peta Shepherd has a know the team interview on the Colony bmx website

What are you up to today?

I just finished work… Chilling out for a bit and then going for a ride somewhere.

Tell us something about yourself people probably don’t know…

I have a twin brother. He doesn’t ride and we don’t look a thing alike. haha

Any plans to travel any time soon?

Hopefully yes. I wanna hit up the states in September/Octoberish.

If someone asked you why they should come visit Brisbane, what would you say?

Non rider: Beaches and theme parks. Rider: All the cool people to ride with and the good parks, plus the weather.

How many other girl riders are there in Australia do you think?

Umm.. not to sure in Australia, though I know there is a hand full in Brisbane and more keep popping up. Which is awesome to see.

Out of the hundreds of parks there are in Queensland what is your favorite to ride and why?

I love some many. But I think Kuraby, it just has fun quarters and banks, and even some little ledges

Femmebmx.tk

What Femmebmx is all about-

“Only boys ride bikes...” says a 9-year old girl. “I didn’t know girls could do that...” says a 27-year-old woman. Many females of all ages are unaware that opportunities to participate in predominately male sports exist. BMX is one of those sports. FemmeBMX is designed to show girls that not just boys ride bikes!

“The boys in the neighborhood told me girls can’t ride well and that I can’t keep up...” Yes, this mentality still exists! Girls get told they can’t, based on the mere fact that they’re female! There are female BMXers all over the world that put the males riders around them to shame with their stealth on the track or shredding abilities at the trails or in the park!

Unfortunately, these girls can be hard to find. Why? It still is not uncommon for girls to get static from their male peers when attempting BMX and other male-dominated sports for the first time, turning them off from the sport altogether.

FemmeBMX was designed to remove the intimidation factor female riders sometimes experience by creating a positive girls-only environment. Female riders will develop the skills it takes to keep up at the park, trails or race track, through a positive, motivating progression-based program designed specifically for girls and women!

Rampant Clothing Co.

Aussie Clothing Company Rampant is one of the many supporters of Australia BMX girl rider Crystal Shepherd. They make plenty of guys and girls apparel, but the thing that caught my eye is their awesome t-shirt designs. Its always hard as a girl rider to find good fitted girls shirts with a good design and better yet are made by an Australian company.

They have now opened an online shop and catalog.

Check it out at - Rampantriders.com

I had a bit of a chat to the guys at Rampant, Heres what they had to say:

How did you come across Crystal, and what made you want to put her on the team?

I met crystal through one of other riders at The Spinal disorder competition last year. We really think female athletes are a great asset to the brand. Crystal is awesome, nothing pretentious about her, tough resilient and a great rider.

You support a few girl riders, but not all BMX's what are the other girls main sports?

Yeah look, we have some great girls on board. Jemma Wilson #1 Enduro rider in Australia and Qld, Tori Dare female MX rider and Kristy Gillespie #2 female MX rider.

You've got some great designs for girls and guys, how do you come about your designs?

Basically I design and print all the gear right here in Australia, Im really hands on like that nothing is mass produced. When designing I'm looking at positive messages not death and destruction, it has been done and is still being done locally and overseas. I want to offer people out there something fresh and positive.

Then we Caught up with Crystal and asked her what she thought of Rampant?

Whats your favourite product from Rampant Product and What are the Tees like to ride in?

I really like the lifestyle tee its got awesome artwork on it. i am also liking the new hats that are coming out and my lanyard is really handy for my car keys..... i find them really good to ride in nice comfortable fit

Help each other out

I got this email from a young girl 'Kevin Elaine'.

Hey. I'm new to BMX, and I'm scared out of my mind. None of my friends are into this, and I don't have a great area to practice tricks. Any advice or tips? It'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read this.
- An Aspiring Rider

Leave some comments to help her out... We all start somewhere so why not make it easier for the next generation of girl riders to get out there and give it a go.

Cory Coffey

This is a little old but a good read

Pioneer of Women's BMX Freestyle & First Women to do a Backflip - Cory Coffey

Author:
Mark Sperling

Your Name: Miss Cory Coffey
Age: 24
Hometown: Ojai, California
Sponsors: DC, Specialized, ODI, and Utopia Optics

How did you get started into riding BMX?
There were some younger boys in my neighborhood that raced bmx bikes, and they encouraged me to go get one... so I did and started going to the race track with them. I raced for about 3 years and then realized that I didnt like to pedal all that much, so I started going to a local indoor skatepark and that was the beginning of my ramp riding... 7 years ago, wow!

You were the first girl to do a backflip. What made you do it, how many times did it take, and whats the process behind doing it.
Yes, I was the first woman in the world to ever do a backflip on a bike... I was 19 years old and was spending a couple of months in Pennsylvania at Woodward Camp.. A guy by the name of Jay Rodriguez was joking around with me one day saying that we were going to learn backflips that night... I said yeah sure whatever.. well I guess he was more serious than I thought.. so that night I started learning them into the foam pit.. I think the second try I actually got the rotation down, and within a week or so I was pulling them on the box jump. I then unleashed it at a contest there at Woodward called the CFB contest. I crashed pretty bad the first two times, but the adreneline was pumping and I was determined to pull it... the third time I pulled it. I never really thought it was that big of a deal... now that I think back on it, it is pretty cool to make history. Basically its one of the easiest tricks in the book I think.. all you have to do is commit to it... make sure you have enough speed, a good enough box jump, and just lean back, spot your landing and there ya go!

What other sports do you enjoy doing then?
I really enjoy snowboarding in the winter and occassionally mt. biking... I also like to play around on skateboards. I grew up riding a skateboard so its always fun.

What was it like to be one of the only female riders in a male dominated sport?
Well when I was younger, I never really realized I was the only girl at the skatepark. As the years went on, I thought it was pretty cool. I could keep up with the guys, and the guy to girl ratio was obviously in my favor. haha

Besides yourself, there are a number of other female rider who have really made some headway in pushing the sport for the girls. What do you think about the women's scene as a whole?
I think that it is def. growing which is awesome.. and I am seeing more and more events that are including womens categories which is pretty awesome. A few years ago that was unheard of...

What women riders come to mind and what are your thoughts on your competitive opponents?
Thats one thing that I dont enjoy is competitiveness... thats what I didnt like about racing... I just look at it as me riding my bike having a good time, traveling the world, and meeting new people.

Is it competitive among the girls, or is it more of a friendship?
I think there are def. some people out there that are competitive, but that comes with any sport. I know a lot of the girls are just like me and are just excited to see other girls riding.

Where do you see the future of women's BMX going?
Honestly, who knows. the world is endless in opportunities, and if we keep pushing the limits, it could be just like any other sport.

Do other female athletes from other sports inspire you? If so, who?
Yes, I am always inspiried by other women athletes... Aimee Mullins is a para olympic athlete that is more than amazing... her courage, strength, and her just being who she is pushes me. I think that the free skier Sarah Burke is awesome.. Lisa Whittaker in skateboarding is really awesome, along with Cara-beth Burnside in skating and snowboarding.

What else do you do besides riding BMX - hobbies, activites, travels?
I love to hang out with friends, go to the beach, hike, eat food. Traveling is such an awesome thing as well.. I love going to new places and meeting people, experiencing different cultures/food.

Do you have a favorite movie star or movie?
I have a few favorite movies... Vanilla Sky, Donnie Darko, and the Winged Migration.

Who are your favorite bands / singers?
BoySetsFire, The Spill Canvas, and Jose Gonzalez.

Where is your favorite place to travel to and why?
Probably the coolest place I've ever been was Africa... I really want to go back there.. so much stuff to do, beautiful scenery, amazing people, and just one of the greatest places on earth!!

What did you want to be when you were growing up (besides a pro rider)?
I've always wanted to be a housewife. I'm also currently completing my Bachelor of Science Degree in Fire Protection Administration Technology at Cal State Los Angeles.

Do you have any words for all the girls out there reading this?
If you want something in life, go and get it. Practice really does make perfect. Don't ever let anyone or anything stand in the way of your dreams!

Shout Outs & Thank yous?
Thank you to Dwayne Taylor for always believing in me, friends, family, Specialized for always giving me my bikes, all my sponsors, and to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!
