Bike Setups

So one of the main questions I get asked is about bike setups and beginning riding. It might be about, what to start with or the difference in brands, lengths, makes etc.

Im going to do a bit of an explanation of my bike set up.

I found it was better to start off on a smaller frame that way you can work your way up until you find a good size frame that you are comfortable with. I started with a custom made 20.25" colony sect frame, then moved up to a 20.5" and am now running a 20.75" colony teddy frame.

Tip: Frames are measured by the size of their top tube

Choosing the right size bars is the same, start out small then move up. Its best to have bars that are around the same width as your shoulders to start out.

If you plan on learning peg tricks its probably best to start out with pegs on your bike as soon as you start riding. When you get comfortable on your bike you will start to learn to ride with the same foot forward, once you know which foot forward you are it usually helps you to figure which side your pegs should be, which way you will air and spin.

Things like seats, break levers and grips are up to you to choose. Its what ever you feel comfortable with.

Theres lots of different options when choosing your bike, some people like to ride with breaks, some like to be breakless. Some people like to ride with a gyro, some people ride with single cable breaks. Some ride a cassette hub some ride freecoasters hubs.

The only way to find out what you feel best suits you is to try it out and see what you feel comfortable with.

The best way to keep learning more is to ask other riders.
